Lump Under Nipple in Males

May 19, 2025

Feeling a lump under your nipple can be unsettling, especially if it’s unexpected. Whether it’s painful, firm, or just noticeable to the touch, a lump under the nipple in males can have several causes—some harmless, others requiring medical attention.

This guide explains the most common reasons for lumps under the male nipple, how to tell what’s normal, and when to consult a specialist.

Is It Normal to Have a Lump Under the Nipple?

A small, soft lump under the nipple is not uncommon in adolescent boys or men going through hormonal changes. In many cases, it may be temporary. However, if the lump is persistent, growing, or associated with pain or changes in the nipple or skin, it should be evaluated by a healthcare provider.

Common Causes of a Lump Under the Nipple in Men

Gynecomastia

The most frequent cause is gynecomastia, which involves the growth of glandular breast tissue beneath the areola. It typically results from a hormone imbalance—either decreased testosterone or elevated estrogen.

Key signs:

  • Firm, rubbery lump under the areola
  • Puffy or raised nipple
  • Tenderness or sensitivity
  • One-sided or bilateral presentation

Gynecomastia can occur during puberty, adulthood, or later in life.

Pseudogynecomastia (Chest Fat)

Unlike gynecomastia, pseudogynecomastia is caused by fat deposits, not glandular tissue. The chest may feel soft without a distinct lump. This condition is often associated with weight gain and can improve with fat loss.

Lipoma

A lipoma is a benign, fatty tumor that may appear as a soft, movable lump under the nipple. Lipomas are noncancerous and generally painless but can be removed if they cause discomfort or cosmetic concern.

Cyst or Abscess

A blocked gland or infected hair follicle can lead to a cyst or abscess beneath the nipple. This type of lump is often painful, red, and swollen. Infections may require antibiotics or drainage.

Male Breast Cancer (Rare)

Although rare, male breast cancer can begin as a hard, painless lump beneath or near the nipple. Warning signs include:

  • Nipple inversion
  • Skin dimpling or changes
  • Discharge from the nipple
  • Firm, immovable mass

Any unexplained or persistent lump should be evaluated to rule out malignancy.

Lump Under Nipple: How to Tell What You’re Dealing With

To evaluate a lump under your nipple, a specialist will:

  • Perform a physical exam
  • Order blood tests to check hormone levels
  • Use imaging like ultrasound or mammogram
  • Recommend a biopsy if the lump appears suspicious

An accurate diagnosis is essential for choosing the right treatment approach.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the diagnosis:

  • Gynecomastia: Gland removal surgery (with optional liposuction) offers a permanent solution
  • Lipoma or cyst: Minor surgical excision, if necessary
  • Infection: Antibiotics or drainage
  • Male breast cancer: Oncology referral for further evaluation and treatment

At our Newport Beach clinic, we specialize in evaluating and treating male chest concerns, including glandular, fatty, or suspicious tissue.
