Does Gynecomastia Surgery Correct Puffy Nipples?

May 26, 2023

Puffy nipples are a common type of gynecomastia that can occur even in otherwise fit and athletic men. If you’re bothered by puffy nipples, then your first step is meeting with a gynecomastia expert like Dr. Joseph Cruise in Orange County, Los Angeles County, and Newport Beach. Dr. Cruise will assess your situation during a consultation visit and recommend the best surgical approach. Here’s what to know about puffy nipples and how gynecomastia surgery can achieve a more masculine chest appearance.

What Are Puffy Nipples?

Puffy nipples are nipples that project outward because of excess tissue underneath the areola. This creates a pointy or cone-shaped appearance to the nipples. Even if the rest of the chest is flat and smooth, the nipple and areola tend to stick out from the rest of the chest instead of appearing “rounded” when seen from the side. They can become more noticeable in hot weather and prevent you from wearing certain clothing.

What Causes Puffy Nipples?

Puffy nipples are similar to traditional gynecomastia in that excess tissue is present. However, puffy nipples generally do not have a fatty component – they can occur on an otherwise lean or muscular chest. Like other types of gynecomastia, puffy nipples can have a variety of underlying causes like hormone imbalance, medication use, or genetics.

Puffy nipples are caused by excess breast tissue that occurs just underneath the areola. This breast tissue can occur whether there is excess fat present or not, leading to frustration for many men who try to lose weight in order to reduce gynecomastia. Puffy nipples range in severity from mild to moderate to significant.

Can Gynecomastia Surgery Correct Puffy Nipples?

Various techniques are used to correct gynecomastia, and a specialized approach is typically needed to get the best result for puffy nipples. Because puffy nipples are caused by excess glandular tissue under the areola, surgical excision is often the best approach. However, if fat is present outside of the areola, a combination approach using surgical excision and liposuction is the best way to achieve a good result. It is important to note, liposuction cannot remove breast tissue. For this reason, surgical excision is always necessary to reduce the appearance of puffy nipples

Dr. Cruise will examine your chest and determine the best approach for gynecomastia and puffy nipples. He’ll also discuss your recovery and help you understand what to expect from gynecomastia surgery. Meeting with a renowned gynecomastia expert and board-certified plastic surgeon is the best way to determine what sort of results are possible with surgery and ensure a great, confidence-boosting result.
