Is There a Non-Surgical Way to Treat Gynecomastia?

March 28, 2023

Gynecomastia is an embarrassing condition for men afflicted by it. This medical condition causes excess breast tissue development in men that have been harshly nicknamed as “man boobs.” If you are unsure about surgery, there are a few non-surgical treatments.

Non-Surgical Gynecomastia Treatments

Non-surgical treatments for gynecomastia may only work to a certain extent. These treatments can help reduce breast fat but will not eliminate glandular breast tissue. However, men with moderate fatty gynecomastia may find some success and improvement with the following non-surgical treatments and lifestyle changes:

Diet and Exercise

The breasts are made up of glandular tissue and fat. With a healthy diet and proper exercise, you can lose some of this fat, potentially decreasing the size of the breasts. Exercise will also help to rebalance hormones, another possible cause of gynecomastia.

Avoiding Alcohol and Drugs

Steroid-induced gynecomastia is a specific type of gynecomastia that bodybuilders often develop because of steroid use. Anabolic steroids are converted into estrogen (the “female” hormone), and this hormone imbalance can result in enlarged male breasts. Alcohol should also be avoided to prevent weight gain and hormone fluctuations.

Hormone Treatments

For men with gynecomastia caused by low testosterone, hormone treatments may improve their condition. Hormone replacement with testosterone will rebalance hormonal levels, limiting the growth of glandular breast tissue.

When to Consider Gynecomastia Surgery

Some men may find these non-surgical treatments ineffective. Even those with minor breast enlargement may not see an improvement with the non-surgical options mentioned above.

If your enlarged breasts persist and it’s causing a disruption to your life,  it may be worth considering gynecomastia surgery. This is the only truly effective way to eliminate gynecomastia and prevent regrowth of breast tissue.

During gynecomastia surgery, glandular tissue is removed, and the remaining tissues are sculpted for a more masculine contour. Liposuction may also be used to remove fat and further define the contours of the chest.
