Schedule A ConsultationGynecomastia, characterized by the enlargement of male breast tissue, can cause distress and self-consciousness for those affected. Fortunately, gynecomastia surgery offers a solution by providing individuals with the opportunity to achieve a more masculine chest contour. In this step-by-step guide, we’ll walk you through the entire process, from pre-operative consultations to post-operative care, so you have the knowledge needed for a successful outcome.
Gynecomastia treatment begins with a consultation with board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Joseph T. Cruise. He has been specializing in gynecomastia surgery in Los Angeles and Orange County for 20 years and is considered one of the top gynecomastia surgeons in the world. During this initial meeting, he will review your medical history, and assess your gynecomastia to determine if you are a candidate for surgery. He will then classify the specific “type” of gynecomastia you have using his Cruise Classification System. He will also discuss your goals and concerns. and explain the surgical options available.
Once you schedule your surgery, you will either have an in-person or phone pre-operative appointment. You will be provided with a list of pre-operative instructions and guidelines. These may include lab testing like an EKG and the avoidance of certain medications and blood thinners. Patients should avoid smoking for at least six weeks prior to surgery and drinking alcohol for at least one week prior to surgery. On the day of your gynecomastia surgery, you will arrive at either our office or an off-site surgical facility, where you’ll be greeted by Dr. Cruise and our team of experienced medical professionals.
On the day of surgery, depending on your case, either local or general anesthesia will be administered to ensure a comfortable and pain-free procedure. Dr. Cruise will begin by making incisions that are strategically placed to minimize visible scarring. Excess glandular tissue (breast tissue) will be surgically removed, and if necessary, liposuction may be performed to remove any excess fat deposits contributing to the breast enlargement. Once the excess tissue has been removed, Dr. Cruise will carefully sculpt the chest area to create a more masculine contour. In some cases, excess skin removal and tightening is needed. The incisions will be closed, and dressings will be applied to protect the surgical site and minimize the risk of infection.
Following surgery, you will be provided with detailed instructions for post-operative care. This often includes using prescription pain medication and antibiotics and wearing a compression garment to reduce swelling and support the chest area as it heals. Strenuous activities should be avoided for at least two weeks. It’s crucial to diligently adhere to all provided instructions to ensure optimal healing and desired results.
