Gynecomastia in Your 20s

September 6, 2022

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a medical condition that causes the development of excess breast tissue in men enlarges their male breasts which can sometimes look feminized. If you have gynecomastia in your 20s, it is likely carried over from undiagnosed or untreated teenage gynecomastia. It is estimated that about 50-60% of adolescents have gynecomastia, but this usually flattens out naturally once he enters his 20s. However, this is not always the case.

Men in their 20’s usually have Type 1, 2 or 3 gynecomastia, but Types 3-5 can be seen in patients who are overweight. It is common for puffy nipples to become more pronounced, and for the gynecomastia spread over the entire chest vs. being confined to beneath the areola. As the breast tissue grows, it hangs over the chest fold and can create a rounded appearance that takes away from a sculpted, masculine look.

Young men with gynecomastia may be unable to wear fitted clothes and find it difficult to look at themselves in the mirror or photos. Fortunately, being young means they will still have tight, elastic skin that can help flatten breast tissue, but the rounded appearance and effects of gynecomastia are still present. If there has been significant weight fluctuation over the years, the skin may be compromised causing skin laxity which contributes further to the appearance of “man boobs.”

Treatment Options

Excess breast tissue is what causes puffy nipples and the appearance of “man boobs.”  Surgery is the required treatment to permanently get rid of gynecomastia. For Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 gynecomastia, an incision will be concealed within the margin of the areola. Whether you choose to have surgery depends on how your gynecomastia is affecting your life.
